February 26 - Heat

Manitoba Hydro gave us the ok to turn on the construction heaters today! We headed out there after doing some painting in the house and what a beautiful moon. This was taken at 7:45 pm. Of course the picture doesn't do it justice, but still wanted to share this big orange ball.

February 24 - Update

Marshall wired up 3 construction heaters today to heat the basement. He will call Manitoba Hydro tomorrow to schedule an inspection and once that is done we can turn them on and start thawing out the ground so the plumber can put the drainage pipes in and then get they can pour the concrete for the basement floor.

3 construction heaters sitting on the concrete pads.

Each one is 4.8 Kw...240 V...30 Amps.

Henri finished up the soffits today. No more snow will blow in!! Yay!!

February 21 - Pictures

We went out tonight to see what Monday's snow and north wind blew into the house...

...and this is what we found. About 2" of snow in the mudroom & dining room. All cleaned up again and the soffits will be finished this weekend so no more snow in the house!!!!

Ray plowed out the driveway today & cleaned up after Monday's storm. Large snowbanks now.

The drifts were quite high...that's what strong north winds will do.

And just for fun...the Captain Morgan pose!!

February 21

It's been pointed out that it has been a while since my last post...sorry.
So, let's see, what have we been up to?
  • Been busy with working on our current house to prep it to go on the market (hopefully by the end of March). Know any buyers?? lol
  • Met with another kitchen designer last week and we are currently waiting for her plan so we can finalize and order as it takes about 2 months for cupboards to be ready.
  • Marshall has now put on his electrician's hat. This is a huge task as there are metres & metres of wire to be run. He has installed all the pot lights, outlet & switch boxes and ceiling boxes. He ran wire last weekend - Friday, Saturday & Sunday (Alanna helped him on Saturday) and he will continue this weekend.

We will try to get some pictures posted by the end of the weekend. Although there are countless hours put into the electrical work so far (lots of drilling of holes and bracing of boxes, etc) it doesn't look like it as the only visible thing is the miles of wire running through the house. No wonder electricians get paid so much. lol

February 10 - Update

Now that the weather has warmed up & it's no longer 40 below, Marshall has been back out working on the electrical - installing the boxes for the switches and plugs and the housing for the pot lights.
Henri has the soffits & fascia just about complete (which is wonderful to keep both the snow and the birds out of the house!). Once the sun room ceiling is closed in there will be no more little birds coming in for a visit!! Last week I shoveled and swept the snow out the front 2 bedrooms (hopefully for the last time!!!) while Marshall did electrical stuff.

Above & below - soffit & fascia is all done here.

This is the only area of the yard where there isn't much snow - it has all blown!

Temperatures were about -4 C this weekend. Warm enough to melt the snow on the roof and create icicles! A sign of things to come! :)

3 rows of pot lights in the ceiling of the living room.

4 pot lights in the kitchen. We had our first meeting with a kitchen designer last week for a quote. Meeting with another this week.

February 2 - All Windows Are In!!!

Great news! As of today we are officially airtight (at lock up stage).
Marshall & Glenn put in the basement windows that were delivered on Friday & the garage windows as well. They also wired up the exterior pot lights and put an outlet in the soffit to plug in the Christmas lights. Marshall spent about an hour sweeping the snow out of the house, hopefully for the last time since the majority of the soffits are up.
